Lessons Learned from a Year of Fortitude

As I prepare to embark on a new year, I can’t help but look back and close out the chapter of 2023. Each year I name my years as it leaves me. It’s been quite a ride, to say the least. 2023 in one word, FORTITUDE.

When I think back on 2023, the image that comes to mind is holding on, trying to stand up. The challenges and obstacles that came my way felt like losing breath each time. At times, it felt overwhelming, and I wondered if the next turn would be even more difficult, scared to look. But amidst it all, there was a constant source of strength that grounded me. My faith.

Every morning, before the world wakes you’ll find me in my “sanctuary.” For the last 9 years I’ve dedicated myself to journaling, bible reading and prayer. Increasing my bond and understanding in His love. It was there that I sought refuge in prayer, immersed myself in the depths of my bible, and poured my thoughts into my journal. It’s the only place I’m home. It’s where I gain my courage and hope to face each day head-on. This year, I tattooed those two words on my arm so every time I looked in the mirror, I could be reminded I was made in His image.

Describing the year I’ve had is daunting. The highs and lows, the triumphs and tribulations, all intertwined to form a web unlike anything I’ve experienced before. Involving every human I love. But every moment, I found myself saying, “Hold on, give me a moment, I’m coming.” Taking a breath, calling on Jesus to guide me and uplift those around me, and then stepping forward with my head held high.

Adversity is something we all face in life. It’s a shared experience that binds us together, and my understanding of this has grown immensely. It’s why my heart continues to expand with compassion and such profound love for others. I don’t usually enter a new year with a specific word in mind. Instead, I look back and assign a theme to the year that has passed. As I say goodbye and reflect on 2023, my year of FORTITUDE, I eagerly step into 2024 with the word “STRETCH.” This year I give it a name.

This year, I want to stretch myself in every possible way. To push beyond my comfort zones and embrace new challenges. But it’s not just about personal growth; I want to help others stretch too. I imagine us all as tight figures, constricted by the fabric of life, but determined to break free and stretch out. It’s time.

Through it all, my defender, best friend, and father has been by my side. His love and guidance have been abundantly clear, even in silent moments of reflection. He goes before me, paving the way, always in motion.

As I closed out 2023, I faced a choice that required courage and determination. Despite facing ridicule for my faith, I pressed forward, knowing that He was with me. In this closing, His presence was crystal clear, affirming that I’m not alone in this journey.

In the year ahead, I pray for the strength to STRETCH. To stretch my faith and discipline, to stretch my abilities and belief in myself, my self worth and to stretch my capacity to help those around me level up the skills and greatness they already hold.

I’m ready to burn the ships (highly recommend listening to King and Country’s song) and stretch forward and upward. And when my spirit dips, I pray for the warmth and steadiness to break through and keep stretching. I pray for biblical truth to prevail.

To all of you reading this, I want you to know that I believe in each and every one of you. You are incredibly loved, and I hope you embark on this new year with the same determination, kindness and love for each other. Let’s STRETCH together and make 2024 a year of growth
